Shendish, Hemel Hempstead

The Shendish Manor has been in existence for centuries. Initially constructed in the 1300s by Ralf de Chenduit, the property has exchanged hands multiple times over the years, with the most transformational buyer being Charles Longman of Longman publishers during the 19th Century.

While the credit for its popularity goes to his papermaking partner John Dickson of the Dickson family for purchasing and converting the Manor into a social and sports club years after, it is the hotel and conference centre that it has become today that makes it truly special.

The Shendish Manor has served different capacities over the years, with the British Army camp being the most historical role during the First World War. Here, soldiers from the Military came to rest, seek medical attention, and plan effective strategies that helped excel in the war.

Currently, the Manor serves multiple roles, including being one of the best wedding avenues. Located at the heart of Apsley in Hertfordshire remains an attractive destination, not only for its history, but for the original features inside as well. This landmark boasts of a Jacobean fireplace with a romantic appeal, especially at night, a high ornate ceiling that keeps air circulation at a maximum to avoid feeling cramped, and an Oak panelling of historical calibre.

Accommodation is available at the Shendish Manor, with different rooms available for guests. There’s the standard double room containing one double bed for the lone ranger, a superior double room with a queen bed for couples, and a standard twin room with two separate beds for kids. The management always assigns a room upon arrival.

While the Manor offers ample rest, it also serves the best delicacies in the entire Hemel Hempstead. Besides the occasional snacks, the hotel includes five-course meals for those who spend the night there. With a friendly and available staff, the Hotel receives an influx of visitors during the peak seasons. However, COVID-19 Shendish Manor has seen a drastic reduction in attendees, partially due to a postponement of events. The Manor seeks to safely and carefully resume functions in due time.

Clearly, the Shendish Manor has lots to offer and the larger Apsley as well. From enjoying a day out in Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park, a sporty afternoon on Marvels Rapids Golf Course, or skating on ice at the Snow Centre, there is no shortage of ways to spend valuable time making memories.
